Born in Korea, and raised from a young age in California, Jean Yu started her own denim line and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) when she was twenty two.
Her introduction to the fashion industry took place at Ronaldus Shamask as an intern and studio assistant. She began her first line of dresses in Jasco matt jersey in 1992 and her dress line soon evolved into a full collection. In the same year, her designs were recognized with The Innovator Design Award from Cotton Incorporated.
In December 2001, Jean Yu re-emerged by launching her signature collection of refined dresses, separates and silk lingerie. Recent recognition of Jean Yu on the international stage includes her membership of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and part of her collection being featured at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the FIT Museum in New York.
The design intention deliberately focuses on the pleasure of wearing a garment that glorifies the body and elevates feminine sensuality.
Sculptural, sensual and sublime, the Jean Yu Collection is distinguished by its modern aesthetics and old world construction. Inspired by the masters, Madeleine Vionnet and Madame Gres, Jean Yu's work follows fluid and sculptural silhouettes with couture construction details. These details are not only applied throughout the collection, but are an intrinsic quality of her architectural approach to design. Beautiful inside and out, each piece is conceived as an object of design in and of itself.
The Jean Yu collection for CoutureLab covers a range of pure silk chiffon lingerie.
