The Bavarian artist Ernst Gamperl was born in Munich, Germany, where he became an apprentice cabinet-maker at the age of seventeen. His love affair with wood brought him to create his own workshop in 1990. There, he began to carve the vessel-like shapes, made with maple, beech or oak, that have come to define his work and are now on available from CoutureLab.
Gamperl has studied the drying properties of wood for the past 20 years. At first, he would carve forms out of freshly cut wood, which took a while to dry before they could be treated. Today, he uses exclusively wet wood, working with the organic growth formation of the material, the rhythmic movement of the grain creating a fissure-like pattern, which is miraculously transformed into the sleek minimalist shapes for which Gamperl has become renowned.
Refusing to chop down ancient trees, he works strictly with wooden blocks from fallen trees, indelibly engraved with the stamps of time, soil and weather conditions. The ongoing dialogue he carries with the grain means that he is able to work in a concise way with the fissures, projections and indentations of the wood.
Gamperl's favourite shape is the circle; circular patterns define his work which, following Sufi custom, is in deep synchronicity with the nature of the raw material itself. After they have been molded, waxed and polished into their finished shape, those same sculptural objects, which CoutureLab is proud to present, seem to revert back to a life of their own: the life of the grain and the ineffable force of nature which in Gamperl's case, has withstood the test of time.
