A global talent rooted by her Kashmiri heritage

Daughter of an inspirational musician mother and military father, Surekha Jain spent the idyllic summers of her childhood in the enchanted vale of Kashmir, developing an appreciation for the country’s fine art and handicraft. For it was here, in Kashmir, that the paisley motif, which originated in Persia, found its place, delicately embroidered and woven into cashmere pashmina shawls.

This interest eventually developed into a passion as Jain delved further into the vast world of Indian craft traditions. Keen to showcase these handcrafted techniques the world over, she set about selecting the most talented embroiderers to establish a line that “the global sophisticated woman could comfortably wear to an opera in Paris or dinner at the Buddakan in Manhattan”.

Having created fine embroidery for some of the most prestigious couture houses around the globe, Jain’s passion for Indian craft is reflected in everything from her clothes and accessories to soft furnishings.

Her collection for CoutureLab fuses these ancient Indian craft techniques that she has become such an authority of, with contemporary designs. Inspired by archaic forms of embroidery she has created a range of exquisitely decorated georgette silk kurta kaftans, embellished tunic dresses and intricately embroidered coats, which have all been handmade in India.
