- Deep in the mountains of the Chinese province of Inner Mongolia wanders the prized Kashmir goat with its double fleece of rough outer coat shielding the most desirable wool beneath. Although today only a small amount of cashmere wool originates in the Indian state of Kashmir (from where the name derives), it was here that it gained popularity.
- From the late 1700s high quality cashmere shawls had infiltrated into France and England through souvenirs from explorers and the military. The demand from Europe kept these skilled weavers in business long after the Mughal Empire collapsed.
- The finest wool usually comes from the throat and underbelly and should be plucked between April and May. When washed in extremely soft and clean water, the silky, luxurious material has the unique ability to remain cool in summer and warm in winter.
- Today the popularity of cashmere is widespread, but with so many different variations on the market it is important to spot lesser quality garments. Cashmere of a high standard will, if treated properly, last a lifetime. The denser the cashmere and the higher the ply, the better it is and the softer it becomes with wear.
