Long handcrafted necklace with black onyx beads and Turkoman pendant
This striking necklace features one of the most recognized ornaments in Turkoman culture, the heart-shaped asyk. It is customary for young unmarried girls to wear their hair in four braids and as a wedding gift, the groom's family present her with the asyk as a hair adornment for the wedding day. Another feature of the metal pendant, which is symbolic in Turkoman culture it the ram's horn motif at the top of the pendant. Representing fertility, the emblem is believed to employ magical power that promotes life and virility.
The asyk pendant hangs from a large collection of small black onyx beads, strung together and fastened at the back with a simple hook and eye clasp.
